August 1997 Working on The Canadian Friend is a joy that we share with Friends all over Canada and we are rewarded for our work with wonderful things for each edition. Quaker concerns about peace, justice, international development were well described in the issues devoted to these themes. As editor, I feel as though I have been given the privilege of finding the most weighty elders among Friends and am allowed to ask them to teach me anything about Quakerism that I want to know. All I have to do is ask them to write an article on the theme of my choice. I thank God every day for this boon because they tell me a great deal, and the whole community benefits. This reading issue is an experiment which we hope you are enjoying. It is a pleasure to be working in the larger format for this special issue and we will be asking people at Canadian Yearly Meeting what they think of it, and how we may improve, at a Special Interest Group which will help us plan for the future of the magazine. However, this letter is about how you may help us in a financial way. We do work under financial constraints. The magazine receives most of its money from the Yearly Meeting, through the Home Mission and Advancement Committee but our budget is very small (even though we make it stretch). We encourage private subscriptions. Have you ever thought of giving a gift subscription to your friends? We would be delighted to know that The Canadian Friend was being distributed outside the Quaker family. It is CYM's major outreach tool after all. We are also very happy to receive donations from readers. The support we receive enables us to make improvements and gives us opportunities to reach out to the wider Quaker community. This year were able to send the editor to a Quaker Women's Theology Conference in Portland, Oregon, which brought together women from the programmed and unprogrammed traditions. The result of this will be an issue in the fall devoted to Quakers in all their diversity. We encourage you to support The Canadian Friend as much as you can by making a donation (see the form attached) of $25, $50, or whatever amount you can afford ($25 would cover a subscription for one year - even for someone overseas). Any level of donation is very welcome and will be eligible for a charitable donation tax receipt. Thank you Friends, for all your support.
