Religious Education SubCommittee of HMAC
The Religious Education
Committee's Terms of Reference are:
1. To encourage and facilitate religious education, which we see as the ongoing process of nurturing the response of the whole person to God's Spirit in every aspect of life.
2. To select, distribute, produce, and encourage the use of materials pertaining to all areas of Friends' Religious Education--First Day Schools, Young Friends, adult education, inter-generational groups, family settings, isolated Friends, and for outreach.
3. To be a resource for programming at Friends' gatherings.
4. To oversee the youth programme during Yearly Meeting sessions. This includes recruiting personnel to coordinate and carry out the activities. In fulfilling this responsibility, Religious Education Committee works closely with Programme Committee.
5. To provide opportunities for teacher training.
6. To work with other Canadian Yearly Meeting committees in areas of mutual concern.
Organization and Procedure (94) VI-72a
The following vision statement
was presented during Yearly Meeting sessions in 1996:
The Religious Education Committee of Canadian Yearly Meeting is concerned to share those things which are eternal. We understand the deepest religious experiences to be about relationships--our relationship to God, to each other and the world. We work to create spiritual links, webs of Friendship, and communities of worship, places of spiritual hospitality for our children, our youth and all others. We are convinced that it is possible to realize and experience these relationships through the gifts of friendship and love towards one another, particularly in and among our Meetings and the Yearly Meeting--the body of Christ--the Blessed Community. The Religious Education Committee wants to bring us to our history and to our "Inward Teacher", helping us to discover who Quakers have been and who we now are. We endeavour to nurture that of God in everyone, trusting that as our children explore Quaker values they, like us, will be led to continue their seeking through Meeting for Worship. We seek opportunities to enable enriching experiences of supportive friendship, spiritual growth, and unity among Friends of all ages. The Religious Education Committee and its programmes provide a visible and tangible expression of these efforts.
